History

The first mentioning of Foca in written documents was in Dubrovnik Archives, in 1368. History records this was a place for transit, shorter or longer staying of: Illyrians, Thracians, Romans, Greeks, Huns, Avars, Slavs, Turks, Germans, Austrians and others. Material heritage that was found suggests the presence of humans in this region since the Neolithic. Ancient prehistoric mounds were found at Bakarevac (towards village Celebici). It is assumed that it was the place of Roman city Berselum (or at Ustikolina). Drawings found on the cave Ledenjaca wall near Miljevina, date from bronze era.

Upper Drina, so as Foca, was part of Raska state, until 1376, and after that Foca was governed by Sandalj Hranic, who was succeeded by Stjepan Kosaca, more known as Herzeg Stjepan, during whose period Foca was called Hotca.

In Turkish period Foca became important merchant center, because it was on the crossroad from East to West.

In that period many caravan serai, merchant and the craft shops were built in Foca. The craft was specially developed. The craft workers made products of metal, leather, wool and wood.

On the territory of Foca municipality, more than 650 tombstones are registered, on different locations.

Austro Hungarian government mostly exploited coal and wood, and for those needs, plenty of infrastructural object have been built, mostly roads and business buildings.

Its large contribution for the struggle against occupation and fascism, Foca gave in WWI as well as in WWII.  One of the greatest WWII battles - Battle of Sutjeska, was held on Foca territory, in place Tjentiste.

Foca has long tradition in tourism. First foreign tourists rafted down the Drina in 1923. Kayak sport was organized in 1931, and in the 1970’s more then 100 000 tourists visited Tjentiste.

Today, Foca is town which has two high education facilities with 20 years tradition: Medical faculty with four departments (medicine, stomatology, health care and defectology) and Orthodox Theology faculty with Theological high-school, as only spiritual institute in Republic of Srpska.

Foca is also regional medical center.
