About Foča municipality
Foča
The municipality of Foča is located in the southeastern part of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BH) and is part of the Republic of Srpska entity. With an area of 1,115 km², the Foča municipality belongs to the largest municipalities in RS and BH. Foča is 72 km from Sarajevo, 270 km in Banja Luka, 340 km in Belgrade, 163 km in Podgorica and 169 km in Dubrovnik. Exceptional natural resources, the largest and oldest national park in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the highest peak in BH, the most well-preserved rainforest in Europe, the seven glacial lakes in one of the most beautiful Balkan mountains - Zelengora, the deepest canyon in Europe, the unique natural phenomenon of the Sand Pyramids, - with rich cultural and historical heritage is an ideal bait for tourists, adventurers, mountaineers, hunters, fishermen, biologists, geographers, historians and many others who recognize its value. The Drina river is formed in Foča and this municipality belongs to the Upper Drina region in which it occupies a dominant position. The first written traces of the name of the town on the banks of the Ćehotina and the Drina date from 1368 and are preserved in the Dubrovnik Archives. Foča stretches from pitiful drills to inaccessible mountain peaks. It is crossed with 17 rivers and rivulets and numerous mountain streams. The difference between the lowest and the highest point in the area of Foča is 2000 meters. Situated on the caravan road of Dubrovnik-Carigrad in the Middle Ages, Foča was an important trading and cultural center. Recognizable by trade and crafts Foča has its own tourist tradition. The first tourists, strangers, descended into rafts down the Drina in 1923, kayak-sport was organized in 1931, and in the 70's the Tjentište (NPS) has been visited by 100 000 to 200 000 visitors. "For tourists, Foča is a convenient starting point to the ends of wild romance in the Upper Drina: in Sutjeska, Zelengora, on the mountains Volujak, Maglić and Ljubišnja", wrote Dragutin J. Deroko in the monography "The Drina". Foča is the city in which people are coming. It has been so for centuries, so it is still today. That's why people are coming to Foca. You should come, too!
