About National Park "Sutjeska"
The National Park "Sutjeska"
The "Sutjeska" National Park is the oldest national park in BH covering 17,250 ha. It was founded in 1962 and is a member of the European Federation of Parks EUROPARK. Thanks to the outstanding natural values and their preservation, since 2000, NP Sutjeska has been included in II category IUCN (Department of Nature and Natural Resources Protection).
One of the special features of NP "Sutjeska" is its position on the main road Belgrade - Dubrovnik and Sarajevo - Dubrovnik. Tjentište, as a central part of the Park, through which one of the most important routes to the sea passes, is 96 km from Sarajevo, 143 km from Dubrovnik, 146 km from Podgorica.
In climatic terms, this area is under the influence of a modified mountain climate.
NP "Sutjeska" includes a spacious mountainous area on the tri-border of Bosnia, Herzegovina and Montenegro, surrounded by the rivers Piva, Drina, the source stream of Neretva, and the mountain massifs of Bioč, Vučevo, Maglić (the largest peak of Bosnia and Herzegovina 2386 m), Volujak, Lebršnik and Zelengora . The park's surface is 17,250 ha, of which more than 66% is covered with forests, and the rest is meadows, pastures and boulders above the upper limit of the forest. The mountains that surround and form part of the NP Sutjeska are part of the Dinaric Alps mountain range.
The most valuable pearl in the series of natural treasures of the NPS is a strictly protected reservation Perućica, one of the few preserved European rainforests.
Perućica is the largest preserved rainforest in Europe. In Perućica, as well as in other parts of the Park, there is a rich and diverse flora and fauna, a series of endemic, rare and protected species. In the very heart of the rainforest there is the Skakavac waterfall, over 75 m high.
Within the Park there are seven glacier lakes that are often called "mountain eyes" because of their exceptional beauty: Orlovačko (1500 m), Štirinsko (1 677 m), Kotlaničko (1 514 m),
Donje Bare (1 500 m), Gornje Bare (1 550 m), Crno (Black) Lake (1 450 m) and Bijelo (White) Lake (1 417 m). Borilovačko is the only artificial lake in Zelengora (1450 m).
Invaluable wealth of the vegetable world is evidenced by over 2,600 vascular plants, with a large percentage of endemic and rare species, that are registered in NP "Sutjeska", over 100 species of mushrooms and a number of medicinal herbs and fruits of nature.
Significant value of NP "Sutjeska" is a rich cultural and historical heritage. Numerous material remains, written sources and monuments of earlier and recent history, among which the most significant Memorial Complex of Battle of Sutjeska, are testifying about the presence of man in this region, from prehistoric times but also testifying about the tumultuous past of this region.
In the Roman period, the Middle Ages, the era of the Turks, as today, this was an important transit area. The very place of Tjentište got its name from a Latin word - a tentorium which means a tent, probably because it is developed in the place of the caravan station.
